From the bush to the beach, from the outback to the reef, national
parks protect Queensland's special heritage.
National parks sample the state's best scenery and incredible
natural diversity, provide homes for our native wildlife and protect
special historic sites and indigenous cultural places.
In February 1999, 450 protected areas including national
parks covered 7 029 319 hectares - just over four percent of Queensland.
In Queensland, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service
has the task of deciding which places should become national parks and
how best to manage the parks to protect their special values.
Legislation protects national parks so they can be passed
intact to future generations. Potentially damaging activities are controlled
by permit.
Some national parks have global conservation significance
and have been placed on the World Heritage list. Fraser Island is a
World Heritage Area.
About half Queensland's national parks have been developed
for public recreation. Here, you can picnic, bushwalk and camp in the
very best Queensland has to offer. Get into parks!
